Waptus River Trail #1311
The trail begins at the end of the road at Salmon La Sac. For 9 miles the trail rises and descends a scant 50-75 feet at a time. I would guess the elevation gain and loss to be around 1500-2000 feet, although the trailhead is 2400 and the lake is at 3000. Power up the rises and coast down the other side makes for a "quick" 9 miles.
Green Trail Map (#208) shows a camping space at 3.4 miles, below is a picture of that site. Excellent size for horses, but the creek access next to the site is too steep for horses.
Here is a picture of the next Waptus river camp at about 5 miles. The picture doesn't do it justice. This a beautiful camp with a nice swimming area/fishing hole next to the camp.

My campsite. Next to Waptus River at about 8 miles from Trailhead.
I first hiked to the lake (staying left at trail junctions-to avoid the river crossing), and found it very crowded. Earlier in the day, other coming down from the lake said that the right side (river fording side) of the lake was very crowded. I ended up hiking back to the camp site in the picture after taking a few pictures.
